Valentino: The Last Emperor
Valentino: The Last Emperor Director: Matt Tyrnauer

Last year's fashion programme allowed us to follow the life of Karl Lagerfeld. This year, cameras have captured the hidden world of yet another big name on the fashion scene - a now-retired Italian fashion designer Valentino. The film takes viewers to the backstages of the creation of haute couture and the preparation of fashion shows. It also sheds some light to the early years of the designer and to his relationship with a long-term business and life partner Giancarlo Giammetti.
The film's shooting team followed Valentino for two years. This resulted in more than 250 hours of recorded material. Of course, nobody knew back then that these were also the last days of glory for this notable figure. Three years ago, when the team started shooting the film, even Valentino himself was not yet aware that the year 2007 was the last one for him to work for the fashion house bearing his name. Probably only time can tell whether the film also captured the last glorious days of the entire fashion empire established by Valentino and Giammetti. A young female designer Alessandra Facchinetti who was taken on to replace Valentino, was unexpectedly (and not very politely) dismissed from her post just a couple of months ago...
Considering this, a film director Matt Tyrnauer must be truly credited for shooting this film. Viewers can also learn more about Valentino - about his slightly grumpy character, his love for dogs (he owned five! pugs) and the birth of some truly remarkable fashion designs.
